National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is responsible for the management and security of the nation’s nuclear weapons, nuclear nonproliferation, and naval reactor programs.
The NNSA was established by Congress in 2000 as a separately organized agency within the U.S. Department of Energy. Their responsibilities extent to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the United States and abroad; providing safe and secure transportation of nuclear weapons and components and special nuclear materials; reducing the global danger from the proliferation of nuclear weapons and materials; providing the U.S. Navy with safe and effective nuclear propulsion; and providing the Nation with an effective nuclear counterterrorism and incident response capability.
